Zanele Muholi is a South African photographer and visual activist from Umlazi, near Durban, who describes their work as documenting Black lesbian, gay, transgender and intersex lives. Faces and Phases is a long-running series of black and white portraits that builds a record of the community. In Somnyama Ngonyama they photograph themselves with everyday materials as props, deepening the contrast of their skin. Tate Modern gave Muholi a major exhibition in 2020.
