Yves Tanguy was a French Surrealist painter, self-taught, who decided to become an artist after seeing a painting by Giorgio de Chirico in a gallery window. His paintings show vast, misty spaces scattered with strange smooth objects that look like stones, bones or sea creatures, painted with great precision. He moved to the United States in 1939 with the painter Kay Sage, whom he married, and lived in Connecticut. Tate holds several of his paintings.
