Winslow Homer began as a commercial illustrator and drew the American Civil War for Harper’s Weekly before turning to oil painting. His scenes of rural life and the war made his name, and a stay in 1881 and 1882 at Cullercoats on the Northumberland coast turned him towards the sea and the people who work on it. From 1883 he lived at Prouts Neck in Maine, painting powerful seascapes, and he was also one of the great American watercolourists. The Gulf Stream, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is among his best-known works.
