William McTaggart was a Scottish landscape and marine painter, born into a crofting family in Kintyre, who trained at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh. He began with detailed figure pictures, then developed a free, light-filled way of painting the sea, the wind and children on the shore that has been compared with Impressionism. His great seascapes, painted out of doors on the coast of Kintyre, include The Storm and The Sailing of the Emigrant Ship. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Scottish National Gallery and Kirkcaldy Galleries hold major works.
