Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter known for still, softly lit interiors in grey and muted tones, often of his flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen with his wife Ida seen from behind. He also painted portraits, empty city buildings and landscapes in the same hushed manner, and visited London several times, painting the British Museum. Long forgotten after his death, he is now one of the best-loved Scandinavian painters. The National Gallery in London holds his Interior.
