Victor Pasmore worked as a clerk for London County Council while he painted, and in 1937 helped found the Euston Road School of realist painting. Around 1948 he turned to abstraction and became a pioneer of constructed reliefs in Britain. He taught at Newcastle, where he designed the Apollo Pavilion at Peterlee new town. From 1966 he lived in Malta, where he died in 1998.
