Umberto Boccioni was an Italian painter and sculptor and the leading artist and theorist of Futurism, which celebrated speed, machines and the modern city. His paintings include The City Rises and the States of Mind triptych, and his bronze Unique Forms of Continuity in Space shows a striding figure dissolving into motion. He joined a volunteer cyclist battalion in the First World War and died at 33 after falling from a horse during cavalry training. Tate holds a cast of Unique Forms of Continuity in Space.
