Ulay, born Frank Uwe Laysiepen, was a German performance artist and photographer who began with Polaroid self-portraits exploring identity and gender in Amsterdam. From 1976 to 1988 he worked with Marina Abramović on performances testing the limits of their bodies and their relationship, such as Rest Energy and Imponderabilia. Their partnership ended with The Lovers, in which they walked from opposite ends of the Great Wall of China to meet and part. He later lived in Ljubljana, where he died in 2020.
