Torii Kiyonaga was the son of an Edo bookseller who studied under Torii Kiyomitsu and became head of the Torii school, makers of kabuki theatre posters and prints. In the 1780s he was the leading ukiyo-e artist, known for tall, graceful women set in realistic outdoor scenes, often across two or three joined sheets. His style was a strong influence on Utamaro. The British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum hold examples of his prints.
