Terry Frost began painting while a prisoner of war in Germany, encouraged by fellow prisoner Adrian Heath. He moved to St Ives in 1946, worked as an assistant to Barbara Hepworth and became one of the leading abstract painters of the St Ives School. His work, from Walk Along the Quay to his late collages, is full of bold shapes and joyful colour drawn from the harbour and the sea. He lived in Newlyn from 1974, was knighted in 1998 and died in Cornwall in 2003.
