Tari Ito was a Japanese performance artist, activist and organiser who lived and worked in Tokyo. Born in 1951, she presented her performances in Asia, North America and Europe over several decades. She was one of the few artists in Japan to be openly lesbian, and her work and organising were closely tied to feminist and queer concerns. As well as making her own pieces, she brought other performance artists together and helped to build a community around live art in Japan. She died on 22 September 2021.
