Tang Yin was a brilliant Suzhou scholar whose official career ended when he was caught up in an examination cheating scandal in 1499. He then lived by his brush, painting landscapes, flowers and, above all, elegant figures of women, and became one of the Four Masters of the Ming dynasty. His colourful life made him a hero of later Chinese stories and plays. His works are in many museums, including the Palace Museum in Beijing.
