Born
1963, Winchester, Hampshire

Sarah Gillespie is a printmaker and painter who works mainly in mezzotint, a slow method that gives deep velvet blacks. Born in Winchester, she studied old master techniques at the Atelier Neo-Medici in Paris and fine art at the Ruskin School in Oxford. Her subjects are close to home, especially moths, blackbirds and winter suns, and the V&A acquired her full suite of moth mezzotints in 2021. She works in Devon and was elected a member of the Royal West of England Academy in 2016.
