Sandra Blow was a London-born abstract painter who studied at Saint Martin’s and the Royal Academy Schools and then in Rome, where she worked with Alberto Burri. Her large paintings and collages used sacking, sand, torn paper and bold colour. She first stayed in St Ives in 1957 and moved there for good in 1994, working in a studio overlooking Porthmeor beach. She was elected a Royal Academician in 1979 and died in Cornwall in 2006.
