Roman Signer is a Swiss artist whose sculptures, installations, photographs and films record short, staged events such as explosions, falls and collisions, an approach he has called controlled destruction. Born in Appenzell, he studied in Zurich and Lucerne and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. His work grew out of land art and performance, and he has filmed hundreds of these actions since the 1970s. He showed at the Venice Biennale in 1976, documenta 8 in 1987 and Skulptur Projekte Munster in 1997, and the Barbican in London gave him a solo show in 2015. He received the Prix Meret Oppenheim in 2010.
