Richard Serra was an American sculptor from San Francisco known for huge, site-specific works of rolled and bent steel. He began with splashed molten lead and props in the late 1960s, then made sculptures whose weight and balance the viewer feels by walking round them. Tilted Arc in New York was removed after public controversy in 1989, and The Matter of Time at the Guggenheim in Bilbao is among his best known. Fulcrum, a tower of steel plates, stands at Broadgate in London, and Tate holds several of his works.
