Remedios Varo was a Spanish painter, born in Catalonia, who joined the Surrealists in Paris and fled to Mexico in 1941. There, from about 1953, she painted the finely detailed, mysterious pictures for which she is known, of slender figures in strange machines and towers, drawing on alchemy, science and mysticism. Her best-known work is the triptych that includes Embroidering the Earth’s Mantle. She was a close friend of Leonora Carrington, and died in Mexico City of a heart attack at 54.
