Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born in Leiden and moved to Amsterdam in the early 1630s, where he became its most sought-after portrait painter. He painted portraits, biblical and historical scenes and a long series of searching self-portraits, and was equally great as an etcher and draughtsman. His best-known works include The Night Watch and The Jewish Bride in the Rijksmuseum. The National Gallery in London holds his Self Portrait at the Age of 63 and Belshazzar’s Feast, Kenwood House has the Self-Portrait with Two Circles, and the Royal Collection, Dulwich Picture Gallery and the National Galleries of Scotland also hold his work.
