Raqib Shaw is an artist born in Kolkata in 1974 who grew up in Kashmir and has lived in London since the late 1990s, studying at Central Saint Martins. He is known for opulent, intricately detailed paintings of imagined paradises and infernos, made with enamel paint, glitter and inlaid jewels, which draw on Bosch, Holbein, Persian miniatures and Japanese lacquer. His series The Garden of Earthly Delights is among his best-known works, and one of its paintings is in the Tate collection. National Galleries Scotland held a major exhibition of his work in 2023.
