Rana Begum makes abstract work that sits between sculpture, painting and architecture, using light, colour and repeated geometric forms drawn from city streets and Islamic pattern. She was born in Bangladesh and came to England as a child, then studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design and took an MFA in painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in 2002. She won the Royal Academy’s Jack Goldhill Award for Sculpture in 2012 and was later elected a Royal Academician. Her public works include commissions for Bristol Beacon and the Selfridges windows in London. She has links to Sussex through a residency at West Dean College in 2005 and a work shown at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, in 2024.
