Pietro Berrettini, known as Pietro da Cortona after his home town in Tuscany, was a painter and architect in Rome. His vast ceiling fresco The Triumph of Divine Providence in the Palazzo Barberini set the pattern for illusionistic Baroque ceilings across Europe. He also decorated rooms in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence and designed the churches of Santi Luca e Martina and Santa Maria della Pace in Rome. Some sources give his birth as 1597, the year he was baptised.
