Pieter Brueghel the Younger

Flemish painter; copies and variations of his father's peasant scenes

Born
1564, Brussels, Belgium
Died
1638, Antwerp, Belgium

Pieter Brueghel the Younger was the elder son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who died when he was a small child. Working in Antwerp, he ran a large studio that produced many copies and versions of his father’s compositions, such as Winter Landscape with a Bird Trap and The Census at Bethlehem, along with his own village scenes. Some 1,400 pictures are linked to him and his shop, which spread his father’s imagery across Europe. His paintings are in many British collections, including the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
