Pieter Bruegel the Elder travelled to Italy in the early 1550s, then worked in Antwerp as a designer of prints before turning mainly to painting and moving to Brussels in 1563. In little more than a decade he produced landscapes and scenes of peasant life on a large scale, among them The Hunters in the Snow, The Peasant Wedding and Netherlandish Proverbs. His sons Pieter the Younger and Jan carried his name into a painting dynasty. The National Gallery in London holds his Adoration of the Kings, and the Courtauld has his Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery.
