Piero della Francesca was a painter and mathematician from Sansepolcro, whose calm, geometric pictures are among the most admired of the Renaissance. His fresco cycle The Legend of the True Cross in San Francesco in Arezzo is his largest work, and his Flagellation of Christ in Urbino and portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino are famous. He also wrote treatises on perspective and geometry. The National Gallery in London has two of his finest panels, The Baptism of Christ and The Nativity.
