Phyllida Barlow was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and studied at Chelsea and the Slade, then taught at the Slade for over forty years. Her sculpture used cheap materials such as cardboard, plywood, fabric and cement to build huge, rough structures that fill and block rooms. Her work only became widely known in her sixties, with the Tate Britain commission of 2014. She represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2017 and was made a Dame in 2021.
