Paula Rego was a Portuguese-born British painter and printmaker who spent most of her working life in London after studying at the Slade. Her large figurative pictures, often in pastel, retell fairy tales, nursery rhymes and novels with a dark edge, and her Abortion series of 1998 helped change opinion in Portugal. She was the first associate artist at the National Gallery, and Tate holds The Dance and several other works. The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego in Cascais is devoted to her.
