Paolo Uccello was a Florentine painter famous for his passion for linear perspective, which Vasari said kept him up at night. His best-known works are the three panels of The Battle of San Romano, one of which is in the National Gallery in London, with the others in the Uffizi and the Louvre. He also painted the fresco monument to the mercenary Sir John Hawkwood in Florence Cathedral. Britain has two more of his best pictures: Saint George and the Dragon at the National Gallery and The Hunt in the Forest at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
