Oskar Kokoschka was an Austrian Expressionist painter, printmaker and playwright whose early psychological portraits shocked Vienna. His painting The Bride of the Wind shows himself with his lover Alma Mahler. Condemned as degenerate by the Nazis, he fled to Prague and in 1938 to London, became a British citizen and painted in Scotland and Cornwall during the war. He later settled at Villeneuve on Lake Geneva and painted city views from high viewpoints. The Courtauld Gallery holds his Prometheus Triptych, and Tate holds several works.
