Andrea di Cione, known as Orcagna, was the leading Florentine painter, sculptor and architect of the mid fourteenth century. His Strozzi Altarpiece in Santa Maria Novella shows a solemn, hieratic style after the Black Death. As a sculptor he made the great marble tabernacle in Orsanmichele, and he served as master of works at Orvieto Cathedral. His brothers Nardo and Jacopo di Cione were also painters.
