Osbert Guy Stanhope Crawford was born in Bombay and grew up with his aunts in London and Hampshire. After serving in the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War he became the first archaeology officer of the Ordnance Survey in Southampton in 1920. He pioneered aerial photography as a way of finding ancient sites and founded the journal Antiquity. His own photographs record the landscapes and monuments of Wessex, and he died at his home in Nursling near Southampton in 1957.
