Nicole Eisenman

Painter and sculptor of the human figure and contemporary life

Born
1965, Verdun, France

Nicole Eisenman is an American artist, born in Verdun, France in 1965, who grew up in Scarsdale, New York and lives in Brooklyn. She is known for crowded, witty figurative paintings of contemporary life, from beer gardens and protests to intimate queer scenes, which borrow freely from the old masters, German Expressionism and cartoons, and for large sculptures of awkward bodies. She received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2015 for restoring the human figure to a central place in painting. The Whitechapel Gallery held a major survey of her work in 2023.
