Mona Hatoum is a British Palestinian artist, born in Beirut, who was stranded in London by the Lebanese civil war in 1975 and studied at the Byam Shaw and Slade schools. Her early performances and videos, such as Measures of Distance, dealt with exile and the body. Later she made sculptures and installations from household objects turned threatening, such as electrified kitchen utensils, a cage of wire lockers lit by a moving bulb in Light Sentence, and a doormat of pins. Tate holds several of her works and gave her a retrospective in 2016.
