Michael Landy is a British artist, born in London in 1963, and one of the Young British Artists who showed in Freeze in 1988. He is best known for Break Down (2001), in which he and his team destroyed every one of his 7,227 possessions in a former shop on Oxford Street, and for Art Bin (2010) at the South London Gallery, a giant skip for unwanted art. He is also a fine draughtsman, as in his drawings of weeds and of his father. As associate artist at the National Gallery he made Saints Alive (2013), kinetic sculptures of saints, and he was elected a Royal Academician in 2008.
