Max Beckmann was a German painter and printmaker whose crowded, dark-outlined pictures dealt with war, cruelty and modern life. Deeply affected by service as a medical orderly in the First World War, he became one of the most important painters in Germany in the 1920s and later painted nine large allegorical triptychs, beginning with Departure. Condemned by the Nazis, he left for Amsterdam in 1937 and moved to the United States in 1947. Tate holds his Carnival.
