Mary Fedden was born in Bristol and studied at the Slade. She married the painter Julian Trevelyan in 1951 and lived at Durham Wharf on the Thames at Chiswick for the rest of her life. Her calm, brightly coloured still lifes of fruit, flowers and jugs set against landscapes and seas are much loved. She was the first woman to teach painting at the Royal College of Art and was president of the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol.
