Martin Schongauer was a painter and engraver from Colmar in Alsace, the son of a goldsmith, and the most important printmaker north of the Alps before Albrecht Dürer, who collected his work. His 116 engravings, all signed with his monogram, were known across Europe and copied widely, among them The Temptation of Saint Anthony. His painted Madonna of the Rose Bower is in the Dominican Church in Colmar. The British Museum holds a large collection of his prints.
