Martin Puryear

Martin Puryear is an American artist, born in Washington, D.C., on 23 May 1941, known for his devotion to traditional craft. He works in a variety of media, but primarily wood, and his reductive technique and meditative approach test the physical and poetic limits of his materials. He has taken part in the Whitney Biennial three times and has represented the United States in solo exhibitions at international biennials, among them the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1989 and the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019.
