Mark Gertler was born in Spitalfields to Polish Jewish parents and won a place at the Slade in 1908. Through Lady Ottoline Morrell he moved in Bloomsbury circles. His Merry-Go-Round of 1916 is one of the great anti-war paintings of the First World War. He suffered from tuberculosis and depression and died in his Highgate studio in 1939.
