Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger was brought to England as a child by his father, a Protestant painter fleeing Bruges, and became one of the most fashionable portraitists of late Elizabethan and Jacobean England. Under the patronage of Sir Henry Lee he painted the Ditchley Portrait of Elizabeth I, now in the National Portrait Gallery. He favoured full-length portraits with closely observed faces and rich costume, and was a favourite painter of Anne of Denmark. Tate holds his portrait of Captain Thomas Lee in Irish dress.
