Lyonel Feininger was a German-American painter and caricaturist, born in New York, who moved to Germany at 16 and first worked as a newspaper cartoonist. He developed a crystalline style of overlapping planes of light in pictures of churches, villages and seascapes, such as his many views of the church at Gelmeroda. He was the first teacher appointed by Walter Gropius to the Bauhaus, and his woodcut Cathedral was the cover of its founding manifesto in 1919. He returned to New York in 1937.
