Lucio Fontana was an Argentine-Italian painter and sculptor who founded Spatialism, which aimed to move art beyond the flat canvas into real space. From 1949 he punctured canvases with holes, and from 1958 slashed them with a blade in his Spatial Concept series, letting the space behind become part of the work. He also made ceramics, sculpture and early light environments with neon. Tate holds his Spatial Concept ‘Waiting’.
