Dame Lucie Rie was an Austrian-born British studio potter who trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna and came to London as a refugee in 1938. In her small studio in Albion Mews near Hyde Park she made buttons for the fashion trade during the war, then refined stoneware and porcelain bowls and bottles with flared shapes, sgraffito lines and bright glazes. She shared her workshop for years with Hans Coper and taught at Camberwell. The Victoria and Albert Museum and the Sainsbury Centre hold important collections of her work.
