Louise Nevelson was an American sculptor, born in the Russian Empire in what is now Ukraine, whose family emigrated to Maine when she was a child. In New York she made monumental wall sculptures from found pieces of wood, such as furniture parts and mouldings, fitted into stacked boxes and painted a single colour, usually black. Sky Cathedral at the Museum of Modern Art is one of her best known. She represented the United States at the Venice Biennale in 1962, and Tate holds Black Wall.
