Louise Bourgeois was a French American artist, born in Paris, whose family restored tapestries and who moved to New York in 1938. Her sculpture, installations, drawings and prints, drawn from childhood memories and her father’s infidelity, came to wide fame only late in her long life. Maman, a giant bronze spider made for the opening of Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2000, honours her mother. Tate holds Maman and many other works, and her Cells are enclosed rooms of found objects and sculpture.
