Leonard McComb was a Scottish painter, draughtsman and sculptor, born in Glasgow and brought up in Manchester, who studied at Manchester and the Slade. He drew and painted heads, flowers, landscapes and the sea with intense detail and called everything he made a portrait. His gilded bronze Portrait of a Young Man Standing caused a stir when Tate bought it, and he was Keeper of the Royal Academy in the 1990s. He taught for many years at art schools in London and Oxford.
