Lawrence Weiner was an American artist from the Bronx in New York and one of the founding figures of Conceptual Art. From 1968 he made works of language alone, phrases painted on walls in bold capitals that describe materials and actions. He held that a work need not be built to exist, and that anyone could make it from his statement. His texts appear on buildings, pavements and manhole covers around the world, and Tate holds several of his works.
