Konrad Witz was a painter from Rottweil in Swabia who worked mainly in Basel from the 1430s. His solid, sculptural figures and keen sense of light and space show the influence of early Netherlandish painting. His Miraculous Draught of Fishes, painted in 1444 for Geneva Cathedral, sets Christ on the real shore of Lake Geneva and is one of the first accurate landscapes in European painting. Much of his surviving work is in the Kunstmuseum Basel.
