Josef Albers was a German-born American artist and teacher who studied and taught at the Bauhaus, where he worked in glass and furniture. He emigrated to the United States in 1933 with his wife, the textile artist Anni Albers, and taught at Black Mountain College and then at Yale. From 1950 he painted more than a thousand works in the series Homage to the Square, nested squares of flat colour that explore how colours change each other. His book Interaction of Color is still widely used, and Tate holds several of his works.
