Joos van Cleve was a leading painter in Antwerp from about 1511 until his death, active in the city’s painters’ guild and head of a large workshop. He joined the careful finish of early Netherlandish painting to newer Italian ideas, painting many altarpieces, devotional pictures of the Holy Family and portraits, some of royalty, including Francis I of France. His Death of the Virgin altarpiece is in Cologne. His portrait of Henry VIII is in the Royal Collection.
