John Robert Cozens was an English painter of romantic watercolour landscapes, nearly all of them Continental scenes. He was born in 1752 and died on 14 December 1797. His career was short and his output fairly small, but he had a large influence on later English watercolourists. His watercolours inspired Thomas Girtin and J. M. W. Turner, who as young men copied many of them, paid by Dr Monro. He worked with a very limited palette, usually blues, greys and greens, and with simple compositions. His work is in Sublime Landscapes at the Laing Art Gallery.
